Naturelog: Monday 5th May

Never heard of this place and not too far away.

In the afternoon went to Bough Beech reservoir near Sevenoaks.

The water level remains very high which is not good for birds on passage as there are no exposed areas to feed on. Consequently the reservoir was quiet with only a few resident water birds and some Common Terns seen.

Walking down to the reserve centre a male Cuckoo could be heard calling from the trees. My first Cuckoo of the year! On the flood by the centre a pair of Canada geese were marshaling their brood of 6 young.

The only Butterfly highlight was a female Orange tip which perched for photographs.

A pleasant afternoon out with the added bonus of hearing Cuckoo, such a magical sound – unfortunately becoming less and less common in this area.
