Nicks workshop mutterings

It’s been a while since I reported on the progress of Lananta. I have been concentrating on the scene at the right hand side which includes the bridge over the creek and the now disused lime kilns. The backscene has been painted and installed together with trees and ground works.

Materials are a mix of static grass, dyed hemp and woodlands scenic fine scatters. The seaweed is a course scatter from green scenes. The sand is a mixture of filler mixed with stone dust supplied by Attwood Aggregates and then painted with washes of watercolour. The water is painted with acrylics and then varnished with a quick drying satin varnish.

The sailing boat is an old model built over 20 years ago for another layout. The rowing boat is a resin casting from Quaycraft as described in a previous posting.

Crowded rush-hour tram in ‘scary’ incident at Sandilands

Dozens of rush-hour passengers on a crowded tram heading towards New Addington last night were thrown to the vehicle floor when the driver applied the brakes in an emergency stop to avoid a collision with another tram.

The incident happened at Sandilands, close to the scene of the tragic tram derailment in November 2016.

On this occasion no one was seriously hurt and there was no suggestion that the tram was travelling too quickly, as happened with the tram crash in which seven people were killed and 61 injured. The official inquiry into that crash issued its report last month, with a series of detailed recommendations.

Last night’s incident occurred around 6.30pm, when a tram packed with more than 100 passengers was pulling out of Sandilands to continue its journey on the New Addington line.

Busting the myth of London being a Rainy city

If there is one thing that tourists ask me when I’m out with them it is Brexit or Donald Trump.  If there is a second thing they ask me it is about the weather.    For some reason, people have the idea that it always rains in London and really it couldn’t be further from the truth.

It ‘rarely’ rains in London.  Whilst areas of the Western Highlands in Scotland, Snowdonia in Wales and the Lake District in NW England have high levels of rain fall by any level of expectation, London does not.  What’s more as the map below shows, London is far from being the driest part of the U.K.

I blame it on Hollywood movies who for some reason think rain it is a signature of London.  Perhaps it is a relic of the old Victorian and 1950’s smogs but I can honestly say out of the…

Announced only earlier this month as part of the 2018 range Hornby have, via their Engineshed Blog here, shown off how much of an advanced stage in development the model is at, with the first fully decorated Engineering Prototype sample having been received. Hornby are already aware that a few slight tweaks are still needed but that is the point of such samples.
Generally the process of the development of such a model is around two years, so it demonstrates how much work had been competed…

“Slow train coming: SBS to air 17-hour Ghan trip on Sunday”

Following the success/controversy of airing a three-hour extract of a train trip through the Australian outback, SBS has decided to air a 17-hour version of the journey on Sunday.  Marketed as Australia’s first foray into the Norwegian genre of slow TV, the program showed – without ad breaks – a driver’s seat view of the famous passenger train on its 3,000km trip from Adelaide to Darwin.

Due to its popularity, SBS station Viceland will air the uninterrupted 17 hours from 2.40am on Sunday.  The three hour version “got the nation talking, trending nationally on social media, and recorded an average of 583,000 viewers in metro and regional markets throughout the three hour program, making this the highest performing SBS program in the past 12 months,” SBS said to explain the novel programming decision.  The…

It was my tender behind y’r honour


Ok, so nipping back to Court for a moment…

What we do know is that there isn’t really much of a standard thing as a GW tender. The only tenders that definitely always had the same type of tank and frame during their life are the Hawksworth ones behind the Counties which were 6″ wider than all the others.

Apart from that, the tenders were like the London Routemaster, entering the works the tank and chassis were separated and overhauled at different rates so what then came back out was almost certainly different.

And so it was I noticed that a number of Collett 3500 gal tenders ended up with Dean chassis. I also noticed the Collett 3500 tank bore a striking resemblance to a Dean 3500 with an added raised lip around the tank filler area.
